Remindher - Return to Rest and Digest State Daily
Our bodies recover, digest, and our brains think more clearly when we are in "rest and digest" state.
This is a nervous state where our bodies sense we are safe and able to repair, recover, think creatively and we feel relaxed.
We want to be (and are designed to be) in this state most of our day unless we are faced with a threat or danger, in which case our brain signals our body to go into "fight or flight" mode instead.
This mode causes our blood to rush to our muscles, adrenal glands to release adrenalin and activates the emotional primal centre of our brain to survive at any chance possible. This was very useful when we were cavemen trying to outrun predators and fight enemies.
Unfortunately, our modern lifestyles create so much stimuli, from stressful jobs, technology, social pressure, and even our high intensity workouts we are required to be "on" all the time. This tends to push our brains and bodies into fight or flight state more often than normal, which isn't the best for our recovery, state of mind or for our results.
The good news is that you can physically signal your body to return to rest and digest, and you want to be trying to return to this state daily. The activities in the "recovery" aspect of Move which can be found in your Powherful Guide Book can assist such as walking, bath, sauna or a massage. Bend session also help!
But the most efficient way, and one that has big return when you practise it is MEDITATION.
Meditation is simply bringing your awareness to your breath, and centring your thoughts to the present moment. You don't need to do hours a day or become a monk to benefit, just 10 minutes will do!
Deep, calming breaths directly affect a nerve called the vagus nerve that can switch your body back to rest and digest.
Be aware if you are someone who tends to get racing thoughts, have tight, stiff and sore muscles, slow recovery and digestive disturbances you MAY be in fight or flight mode most of your day, so this may take some practise!
To help you, I have created simple meditations to get you started. You can find meditations at . Give it a go!
