Having Trouble Sleeping Well? Try these 6 tips!
How is your sleep on an average night?
Getting enough sleep, and getting good quality sleep set you up for an amazing life, because this is where you recover, balance your mood and replenish your energy!
If you struggle making it through the day with energy, make sure you are looking at your sleep habits first.
Here are tips you can use to improve your sleep:
💤Set routine and boundaries around your bed time and wake up. If possible aim to go to bed at a similar time, and wake up at a similar time, and allow for 8 hours.
💤Aim to wake up on one alarm, rather than snoozing. Put your phone or clock far away enough that you have to get up to turn it off, or turn off snooze.
💤Reduce caffeine after 12 noon. Caffeine has a half-life of around 5 hours, so even if you don't feel it, it will be having an effect on your ability to wind down at night.
💤Make your room dark environment at a comfortable temperature. You may need to invest in blockout curtains. This is to reduce disruptions during the night.
(Sorry to people who are new parents, have a snoring partner or have cats that do zoomies at 3am 😂)
💤Reduce your screen time in the hour before bed. While I love watching a show at night to chill out, in the hour before bed aim to reduce screen time and light exposure. Light sends signals to our brain to stay alert. Instead of scrolling Instagram or watching Youtube, take your shower and do your night routine and then choose instead to do some breathing exercises or relaxation. This will wind your mind down, rather than rev it up.
💤Do breathing exercises before bed. Your breath is our concious way we can activate our body’s vagus nerve which can get us into a rest and digest response. Aim to do deep belly breathing for a few minutes before you go to sleep. You could use a guided meditation, music or silence, all are great ways to bring your attention to your breath and body.
Have a think about what you could include into your day to improve your sleep. A great day started with the night before!
